Biotechnology

Biotech as a Business

Biotechnology has long played an important role in not only Australia's knowledge base and production capability, and therefore its economy, but also to the health of all Australians. We at LegalIT have a close interest in the biotech industry and have at any given time always represented one or more sectors of the industry.

If you are seeking to take an active part in biotechnology commercialisation as a start-up venture then you will be (or will soon become) aware of the labyrinth that awaits you as you seek to turn a great idea into a commercial enterprise - for the venture to succeed, you must tread carefully and methodically through the appropriate stages from business plan and structuring, governance and administration to execution and management, while at the same time maintaining and managing research and development, and turning that into your desired outcomes, whether they be public benefit, new discovery, profit for your organisation, or all of those things.

If you are in the biotech industry, you will be well aware of the regulatory minefield with which you must comply, particularly when seeking to release products for human consumption. You should also be aware of the potential value of any intellectual property you develop or assist to develop in the industry.

If you have developed useful products or processes, it is important that you keep those protected. Similarly, if you have developed any intellectual property at all (and if you have taken part in development projects or given presentations, you have undoubtedly created valuable intellectual property somewhere along the way), you should protect that intellectual property so that it remains your own even though you will share it with the world in the future.

If you are seeking to invest in the biotech industry, you will need to minimise the risks inherent in your investment and find out as much as you are able to about any legal challenges facing what you are investing in.

How Can LegalIT Help?

Our experience includes representing both major and minor players from diverse parts of the biotech industry including CRCs, biotech venture companies (both public and private), investors, inventors, production companies and recruitment organisations.

Our principal is also a past Committee Member (of a number of years) of the Queensland chapter of Ausbiotech.

Wherever you stand (or intend to stand) in the biotech industry, and whether you are a small start up venture, an individual seeking to protect your own rights or a major multinational seeking the broad spectrum of legal protection (from regulatory compliance to enforcement), we have the experience to provide you with all the legal assistance you will require.
